It was produced by DuMont Releasing Company and A&E Enterprises (now A&E Networks) in association with NHK. It was the first and only television film to be released in the United States. It stars Natasha Richardson as Anna Anderson and Willem Dafoe as Igor Gouzenko.
In the United States, the film was originally a first run theatrical release for the United Artists Corporation. In the UK, a VHS release by Channel 4 was released in 1987. The film was first broadcast on the American television network A&E (also known as American Movie Classics) on June 4, 1986. On April 30, 2016, A&E re-aired the original film for a limited two-night only event titled “The Return of Anastasia” with performances from ballet stars, ballet music, and a panel of experts.
